Home About us
Our story begins with our great-great-grandfather
Carl Stefanus Dahlström, born 1866. From an apprenticeship in Stockholm in 1883 to five generations of master chimney sweeps in Hedemora.
The family line
A trade handed down
Carl Stefanus became an apprentice in Stockholm in 1883 under master chimney sweep Albert Gustaf Elander. After a long journeyman’s travels from north to south he finally ended up in Vänersborg, where he received his certificate of apprenticeship. The year was 1901.
He then moved to Alingsås, and in 1919 to Hedemora, where he swapped places with master chimney sweep Axel Fjägerholm — who in turn became master in Alingsås. After Carl Stefanus, his son Georg Dahlström took over the district, followed by Georg’s son Alf Dahlström. In 1992 Torbjörn Dahlström became master chimney sweep in Hedemora municipality.
In 2025 Torbjörn’s son Christian Dahlström was appointed managing director of the companies, and responsibility for sweeping in Hedemora and Säter passed to master chimney sweep Peter Gunnarsson.
We are now five generations of master chimney sweeps in Hedemora.

Today
Three companies, sixteen employees
From the ground up we have built three fine companies. Six partners with master certificates, sixteen employees — and five generations of master chimney sweeps in Hedemora to be proud of.
From the company archive
The sweeping crew
The master and the clerk in hats, the journeymen with brushes over their shoulders and the apprentices seated on the floor. This is how a sweeping crew looked when the photographer came to call — work clothes black with soot, faces washed as best they could.
The name
Why “Skrået”?
A skrå was a craft guild: the order that bound apprentice, journeyman and master together, and decided who was allowed to practise a trade. Chimney sweeping is one of the crafts where that order has lived on the longest — the master’s certificate is still the proof of a completed apprenticeship, an examination and professional skill.
We carry the name because the path through the trade looks the same today as it did in 1883: one person teaches another, year after year, until the skill is in their hands.
Words from the trade
- Lärling — apprentice: someone learning the craft from the ground up under a master.
- Gesäll — journeyman: a qualified craftsman working under a master, in the past often travelling between districts.
- Lärobrev — certificate of apprenticeship; Carl Stefanus received his in Vänersborg in 1901.
- Mästarbrev — master craftsman’s certificate, the highest qualification in the trade. All six of our partners hold one.
- Frist — the statutory interval between two sweeps, set by the municipality.
